Villarreal continued their march toward a top-three finish with a clinical 2-1 victory over a struggling Athletic Bilbao on Sunday night. Despite a late surge from the hosts, the “Yellow Submarine” proved too organized for a Bilbao side that is now looking nervously down the table after a dismal run of form.

The match kicked off with high intensity, but it was the visitors who struck first. Sergi Cardona silenced the San Mamés crowd in the 26th minute, finishing coolly after being set up by Oluwaseyi. Bilbao struggled to find their rhythm, and things went from bad to worse just before the break. In stoppage time of the first half, Gonzalez doubled Villarreal’s lead, leaving the Basques with a mountain to climb.

Second Half Drama

Ernesto Valverde’s men came out with more intent in the second half, dominating possession (61%) and racking up a staggering 15 corners. However, the Villarreal defense, anchored by a disciplined backline, held firm for the majority of the period.

The breakthrough for the “Lions” finally came in the 84th minute when Gorka Guruzeta headed home a cross from Yuri Berchiche, sparking hopes of a dramatic comeback. The final minutes were frantic, with Bilbao throwing everything forward, but the equalizer remained elusive.

What This Means

The win keeps Villarreal firmly in 3rd place with 61 points, applying pressure on the traditional giants at the top. For Athletic Bilbao, the defeat marks their fourth loss in five matches, leaving them stagnant in the middle of the pack and searching for answers as the season enters its final stretch.
