The stage is set for a massive all-Baden-Württemberg clash this Thursday night as defending champions VfB Stuttgart host SC Freiburg in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal. With a ticket to Berlin on the line, the atmosphere at the MHPArena will be electric as two of the Bundesliga’s most consistent performers go head-to-head.

The Defending Champions’ Dilemma

Sebastian Hoeness has turned Stuttgart into a powerhouse, but the “Die Schwaben” come into this match looking to shake off a bruising 4-2 defeat to Bayern Munich last Sunday. Despite sitting comfortably in 4th place in the Bundesliga, their recent form has been a bit of a roller coaster—three wins and three losses in their last six.

However, the DFB-Pokal is their sanctuary. Stuttgart hasn’t lost a cup match in their last 10 attempts and has turned their home turf into a fortress, winning five consecutive Pokal matches in front of their fans. They are desperate to become the first team since RB Leipzig to secure back-to-back titles.

Freiburg’s Golden Opportunity

Freiburg, currently 7th in the league, arrives in Stuttgart with momentum on their side. Julian Schuster’s men have been on a tear, winning four of their last five matches, including a gritty 2-1 win over Heidenheim just days ago.

Freiburg is currently fighting on two fronts, having reached the Europa League semi-finals as well. This “Breisgau-Brasilianer” side is resilient, organized, and has already proven they can beat Stuttgart this season, having claimed a 3-1 victory in their first league meeting of the campaign.

Key Players to Watch

Ermedin Demirovic (Stuttgart): The Bosnian forward has been a thorn in Freiburg’s side all season, scoring in both Bundesliga fixtures against them. With 23 goals in all competitions, he is the man Freiburg must stop.

Deniz Undav (Stuttgart): The focal point of the attack, Undav’s link-up play and clinical finishing make him the bookies’ favorite to open the scoring.

Igor Matanovic (Freiburg): With 3 goals in this year’s cup run, Matanovic is the danger man for the visitors and will look to exploit a Stuttgart defense that has conceded 10 goals in their last six outings.

Predicted Lineups

VfB Stuttgart (4-2-3-1): Nubel; Vagnoman, Hendriks, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Karazor, Stiller; Leweling, El Khannouss, Fuehrich; Undav.

SC Freiburg (4-2-3-1): Mueller; Treu, Ginter, Ogbus, Makengo; Eggestein, Manzambi; Beste, Suzuki, Scherhant; Matanovic.

Prediction: Stuttgart 2-1 Freiburg

Expect a high-octane affair with plenty of goals—Over 2.5 goals has hit in 8 of Stuttgart’s last 10 matches. While Freiburg is in better immediate form, Stuttgart’s historical dominance in the cup and their home advantage should be just enough to see them through. We’re backing the defending champs to edge this in a 2-1 thriller.
