There is something different about a European night in Birmingham. Tonight, the air at Villa Park will be thick with tension as Aston Villa welcomes Nottingham Forest for the second leg of an all-English Europa League semi-final.

Forest arrives with a slender 1-0 lead thanks to Chris Wood’s clinical penalty in the first leg. For the Tricky Trees, they are 90 minutes away from their first major European final since the glory days of 1980. For Villa, it’s about proving that Unai Emery truly is the undisputed “King of the Europa League.”

The First Leg: A Disciplined Forest Masterclass

The City Ground was rocking last Thursday, and Forest didn’t disappoint. While Villa dominated much of the ball, they lacked the finishing touch that has defined their season. The breakthrough came when Lucas Digne was penalized for a handball in the box, allowing Chris Wood to smash home the only goal of the game.

Villa huffed and puffed, but Forest’s defensive block—led by the indomitable Nikola Milenković—refused to buckle. It sets up a fascinating second leg where Villa must attack, playing right into the hands of Forest’s lightning-fast counter-attack.

Team News: The Return of the Heavy Hitters

Both managers rotated heavily over the weekend, with mixed results.

Villa’s Fresh Legs: Unai Emery rested almost his entire first XI in a tame 2-1 loss to Spurs. Expect Ollie Watkins, John McGinn, and Youri Tielemans to return to the lineup tonight. The big question mark is at right-back, where Matty Cash will need to be at his best to contain the pace of Neco Williams.

Forest’s Momentum: Vítor Pereira’s side is flying. They are unbeaten in 10 matches across all competitions, including a morale-boosting win at Chelsea on Monday. However, they will be without the injured Ola Aina, which is a significant blow to their defensive solidity on the flank.

The Prediction: The Emery Effect

You can never bet against Unai Emery in this competition. Villa has won all six of their Europa League home games this season, often by multiple goals. While Forest will be compact and dangerous on the break through Morgan Gibbs-White, the sheer pressure of a night at Villa Park usually wears teams down.

Expect Villa to level the aggregate early, leading to a cagey second half that could go all the way to the wire.

Score Prediction: Aston Villa 2-0 Nottingham Forest (2-1 on aggregate)
