The relief vibrating through the Allianz Riviera on Friday night was loud enough to shake the entire French riviera. In what was dubbed by the local media as the “Match of Fear,” OGC Nice managed to survive the ultimate scare, defeating AS Saint-Étienne 4-1 in the second leg of their relegation play-off to retain their position in the top flight of French football.

After a tense, completely lifeless 0-0 draw in the first leg three days prior, everything came down to ninety minutes on Friday. For a club that began this rollercoaster 2025/2026 season playing in the preliminary rounds of the UEFA Champions League, the mere reality of fighting for top-flight survival was a massive shock to the system. But when it mattered most, Claude Puel’s men stepped up to stop the rot and save their Ligue 1 status.

A Night of High Drama and Pure Relief

Playing in front of empty stands—a punishment following recent pitch invasions—the atmosphere was eerie, and the tension on the pitch was thick enough to cut with a knife. Saint-Étienne, desperate to seal an immediate return to the first division, threw everything they had at Nice early on. The visitors even had a Lucas Stassin goal ruled out for offside just ten minutes in, sending a massive shiver down the spines of the home side.

Nice weathered that early storm, but the match truly exploded into life after the hour mark.

In the 61st minute, a long throw into the Saint-Étienne penalty box caused utter chaos. The ball bounced loose and fell perfectly into the path of veteran full-back Jonathan Clauss, who didn’t hesitate, smashing a fierce, left-footed strike past Gautier Larsonneur to put Nice 1-0 up.

The joy was short-lived, however. Just fifteen minutes later, Antoine Mendy handled the ball in the box, giving away a penalty. Saint-Étienne’s Zuriko Davitashvili stepped up and calmly tucked it away to bring the visitors level. With the aggregate score tied at 1-1 and extra-time looming, panic started setting in.

The 11-Minute Blitz

What happened next will be talked about in Nice for years. Instead of crumbling under the pressure of potential relegation, Les Aiglons responded with a ruthless, jaw-dropping counter-offensive, scoring three goals in just eleven minutes.

Barely two minutes after conceding the equalizer, substitute Kaïl Boudache picked up the ball on the edge of the area and curled a beautiful, low effort into the bottom-left corner to restore Nice’s lead.

Then, it became the Elye Wahi show. The explosive 23-year-old forward, who had endured a frustratingly quiet domestic campaign with just five goals prior to kick-off, chose the biggest moment of the season to become an absolute hero. In the 86th minute, Wahi collected a slick pass from Tom Louchet and slotted home a clinical low drive to make it 3-1.

With Saint-Étienne throwing everyone forward in a desperate, dying bid to save their season, Nice caught them completely exposed on the break deep into stoppage time. Sofiane Diop turned provider, feeding Wahi who raced clean through on goal and delightfully dinked the ball over an advancing Larsonneur to cap off a thumping 4-1 victory.

Looking Ahead

While the celebrations inside the dressing room will be wild, this survival acts as a massive wake-up call for OGC Nice. To go from chasing Champions League football to finishing 16th and barely surviving a relegation play-off highlights a deeply flawed campaign. With the club currently on the market and owner Jim Ratcliffe actively seeking a buyer, securing their Ligue 1 status was economically crucial. Had they dropped to the second tier, the club’s valuation would have plummeted.

Puel has a mountain of work to do this summer to rebuild a fragile squad that conceded 60 goals this season. But for now, the fans can breathe a massive sigh of relief. Nice is staying right where they belong.
