Real Madrid are moving at lightning speed to fortify their defense for next season, locking down a sensational verbal agreement to sign French powerhouse Ibrahima Konaté. The 27-year-old centre-back is set to move to the Santiago Bernabéu on a free transfer following the dramatic breakdown of his contract talks with Liverpool.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Los Blancos have successfully convinced Konaté to snub massive financial offers from Saudi Arabia, as well as concrete interest from Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. The towering defender has given the green light to a four-year contract structure in the Spanish capital, eager to undertake a massive new chapter in his career.

The move comes just days after Konaté sent shockwaves through Merseyside by confirming his emotional departure from Anfield on social media. Despite indicating back in April that a contract renewal was close, negotiations abruptly collapsed over bonus structures, allowing Madrid to swoop in and land one of the Premier League’s most dominant physical defenders without paying a single penny in club-to-club transfer fees.

For Real Madrid, this represents yet another masterclass in free-agency recruitment, mirroring the previous cut-price and free signings of Antonio Rüdiger, David Alaba, and Kylian Mbappé. Following a disappointing, trophy-less 2025/26 campaign, reinforcing the backline became an emergency priority. With Alaba set to depart and Éder Militão enduring ongoing fitness issues, Konaté’s immense recovery pace and aerial dominance make him the absolute ideal profile to partner Rüdiger.

Crucially, the Frenchman will also reunite with his former Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made his own high-profile switch to Madrid last summer. Konaté’s historic ability to brilliantly cover the right flank whenever Alexander-Arnold pushed forward is heavily rumored to be a major tactical factor behind Madrid’s pursuit.

While the verbal agreement is completely solid, the deal will not be formally signed and sealed until after Real Madrid’s presidential elections this coming Sunday. Incoming manager José Mourinho—whose highly anticipated return hinges entirely on Florentino Pérez winning re-election—has reportedly prioritized a no-nonsense defensive foundation, with Konaté designated as the crown jewel of his new-look backline.
