The summer reset at Old Trafford is producing plenty of unexpected storylines, but few quite as intriguing as the impending return of André Onana.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 30-year-old Cameroonian international is officially heading back to Manchester United following the conclusion of his season-long loan spell at Trabzonspor. The current roadmap will see Onana report directly to Carrington to join pre-season training under the watchful eye of manager Michael Carrick.
It marks a fascinating crossroads for a player whose United career looked completely dead and buried last summer. Following a turbulent, error-strewn initial spell at the club, INEOS deemed the £43 million signing surplus to requirements, shipping him off to Turkey while bringing in young Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens. Lammens has since brilliantly seized the number one jersey, anchoring a rejuvenated United side that successfully secured a return to the UEFA Champions League.
Away from the intense spotlight of the Premier League, Onana quietly rebuilt his fractured confidence in Süper Lig. He put together a stellar campaign for Trabzonspor, racking up over 30 appearances and culminating in a heroic performance to lift the Turkish Cup last month.
However, his return to Manchester feels more like a tactical pitstop than a genuine redemption arc. Rumors out of Carrington suggest Onana is highly eager to fight for his place and push Lammens for the starting spot, but the INEOS hierarchy has very different plans. Behind the scenes, United are actively working to find a permanent buyer to completely clear his heavy wages off the books.
The situation is further complicated by United’s Champions League qualification, which has triggered a contractual pay raise for Onana this summer—making his salary a massive roadblock for potential suitors.
Trabzonspor are desperate to keep their cup-winning hero and have already approached United regarding a second loan deal that would keep him in Turkey until June 2027. Fellow Turkish giants Beşiktaş are also keeping a close eye on the situation. For now, Onana will pull on the United training kit once again in July, but all signs point to the club trying to engineer a permanent exit before the window slams shut.
