Real Madrid’s upcoming boardroom battle is heating up to be the most dramatic in two decades, and the challenger has just dropped an absolute nuclear bomb of a transfer promise.

Renewable energy tycoon Enrique Riquelme has officially submitted his formal candidacy to challenge Florentino Pérez for the Real Madrid presidency. For the first time since 2004, Pérez faces a legitimate opponent after Riquelme successfully locked down a massive €193.7 million bank guarantee backed by major international institutions.

But while the corporate side of the bid is secure, Riquelme knows that the fastest way to win the hearts of the Madridistas is through blockbuster signings on the pitch. Standing outside the club’s offices, the 37-year-old billionaire made his opening campaign statement: if he wins the election, Manchester City maestro Rodri will be playing his football at the Santiago Bernabéu next season.

The promise is a masterclass in political timing. Real Madrid fans have been deeply frustrated by the club’s total lack of representation in Spain’s 2026 World Cup squad. Riquelme explicitly tapped into that anger, lamenting that a powerhouse club like Madrid shouldn’t leave its fans without local heroes to root for on the global stage. Signing Rodri—the reigning Ballon d’Or winner and the undisputed engine of the Spanish national team—would immediately fix that identity crisis.

The timing couldn’t be more perfect for a potential transfer. Manchester City is entering a turbulent transition period following Pep Guardiola’s emotional exit, and Rodri is entering the final year of his contract. Reports indicate that behind the scenes, the 29-year-old midfielder has rejected City’s latest bumper contract offer, dropping massive hints that he is ready for a new challenge back home in Spain.

When questioned at Spain’s World Cup training camp about the strong links to Real Madrid and Riquelme’s explosive campaign promises, Rodri didn’t shut the door. Instead, he kept his cards close to his chest, stating he is completely focused on the tournament in North America and will firmly address his club future once the World Cup concludes.

Riquelme has already teased that he has two international superstars and a world-class manager under contract if he pulls off a shocking victory. By putting Rodri at the very center of his sporting project, the young challenger has turned the presidential race into a high-stakes referendum on the future of Real Madrid. Florentino Pérez has built a legacy on standard-setting Galáctico signings, but this time, his opponent is using his own playbook against him.
