Chelsea are reportedly circling a surprise summer transfer swoop for Darwin Núñez, the 26-year-old striker currently at Al‑Hilal, with sources claiming the Blues are monitoring his situation closely as his future in Riyadh becomes uncertain.

After a mixed spell with Liverpool FC, where he scored 40 goals in 143 appearances but struggled for consistent form, Nunez moved to Saudi Arabia in 2025. Since then his circumstances have taken a dramatic turn – the arrival of Karim Benzema has seen Nunez left out of Al-Hilal’s domestic league squad due to foreign-player limits, leaving him without regular football.

That tricky situation has fuelled speculation that his European adventure could resume as early as this summer. And why Chelsea? Former Blues defender Marcel Desailly has publicly backed the idea of Nunez at Stamford Bridge, arguing that the striker has “quality and intelligence” that could shine if surrounded by the right environment.

Desailly even went so far as to compare the Uruguayan’s potential impact to that of legends like Dennis Bergkamp, insisting that confidence and game time could unlock the kind of performances fans dream about.

From Chelsea’s perspective, this would be a statement signing. The Blues are keen to bolster their attack after a season where goals have sometimes dried up, and adding a big-name centre-forward could reshape their summer strategy. Other clubs are also believed to be in the mix for Nunez’s signature, but with his situation in Saudi Arabia heating up, all eyes could be on London next.

Whether the move materialises remains to be seen, but one thing’s clear: a Chelsea-Núñez reunion in the Premier League would be one of the summer’s most talked-about headlines.
