RIO DE JANEIRO, March 3, 2026 — In one of the most unexpected managerial moves in recent South American football, Filipe Luís has been sacked as head coach of Flamengo despite an emphatic 8–0 win over Madureira that booked the club’s place in the Campeonato Carioca final.
The decision, confirmed by the club on Tuesday, came immediately after Luis’ post-match press conference, with director José Boto informing him of the dismissal in an unusually brief exchange. Assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares were also relieved of their duties.
Despite the lopsided victory, the club’s poor start to the 2026 season — marked by losses in the Supercopa do Brasil and Recopa Sudamericana and a sluggish league performance — appears to have sealed his fate.
The 40-year-old former defender rapidly rose through Flamengo’s ranks, taking charge of the first team in 2024 and leading them to a haul of major trophies, including the Copa Libertadores and Série A title. Reports also highlight that supporters and sections of the fanbase had grown increasingly restless during recent results, with protests at the club’s training ground.
Flamengo’s official statement thanked Luis for his contributions and wished him well in future endeavours — leaving one of South America’s brightest young coaches unexpectedly on the market.
