Diogo Dalot, the Portuguese international and Diogo Dalot who stars at Manchester United, has outlined just how influential Cristiano Ronaldo remains for Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal — and how much his teammates want to help the legendary striker finally win the FIFA World Cup before he retires.

Dalot praises Ronaldo’s lasting impact

In a recent interview, Dalot was asked about the ongoing debate over Ronaldo’s role as he approaches the 2026 World Cup at age 41. Despite questions about Ronaldo’s age and fitness, Dalot didn’t hold back: Portugal “are a better team” when Ronaldo is on the pitch, with his presence forcing opponents to alter their tactics and giving Portugal strategic advantages.

Dalot highlighted Ronaldo’s football IQ — how he adapts his game even when he can’t run as much as he once did — and how his mere inclusion boosts Portugal’s attacking threat.

Teammates want a historic finish

Beyond tactics, Dalot stressed the emotional and collective desire within the squad: “every Portugal player wants to see Ronaldo win the World Cup.” According to Dalot, the whole team is motivated to help Ronaldo add the one major trophy that has escaped him, describing that goal as “a beautiful story” that everyone in the squad wants to be part of.

Ronaldo’s mentorship and legacy

Speaking with Rio Ferdinand, Dalot also reflected on his own relationship with Ronaldo, recalling how the veteran helped him mature at Manchester United and how that guidance is now influencing others around him.

What it means for Portugal

As Portugal prepare for further international challenges — including the Nations League and the buildup to the World Cup — Dalot’s words underline the dual role Ronaldo still plays: as a vital tactical contributor and as an inspiration in the dressing room. His teammates clearly want him to finish on the highest possible note, both for his legacy and for the team’s ambitions.
