A dramatic night unfolded at St James’ Park as Newcastle United F.C. were denied a famous victory after FC Barcelona rescued a 1–1 draw with the final kick of the game in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg on Tuesday night.
Newcastle looked set to claim a huge European win in front of their passionate home fans after Harvey Barnes fired the Magpies into the lead in the 86th minute, volleying home from close range after a dangerous cross into the box. The stadium erupted as Eddie Howe’s side edged closer to a memorable Champions League victory.

However, the drama was far from over. Deep into stoppage time, Barcelona were awarded a penalty after a late challenge in the box. Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick with the last kick of the match, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and breaking Newcastle hearts.
The equaliser ensured Barcelona escaped England with a crucial away result and now head into the second leg in Spain with the momentum slightly in their favour. Despite the late setback, Newcastle will take confidence from their performance after matching the Spanish giants for most of the match.
The tie now remains wide open heading into the return leg at the Camp Nou, where both teams will battle for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
