While Bayern Munich was busy imploding at the BayArena, Borussia Dortmund kept their heads. In a clinical, dominant display at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday, Dortmund swept aside FC Augsburg 2-0, slicing the gap at the top of the Bundesliga to nine points.
The yellow wall is starting to believe again.
Adeyemi Sets the Tone
It didn’t take long for the hosts to assert their authority. In the 13th minute, Maximilian Beier’s deflected cross looped perfectly into the path of Karim Adeyemi, who hammered a left-footed strike past Finn Dahmen. Dortmund could have been out of sight before the interval, but the woodwork denied both Beier and Adeyemi in a frantic six-minute spell.
“We started with the right intensity today,” Adeyemi said, clutching his Man of the Match trophy. “When you see the leaders drop points, you have to be ready to pounce.”
The Reggiani Moment
The second half followed a similar pattern of BVB dominance, but the killer blow came from an unlikely source. In the 59th minute, Julian Ryerson—who was a constant menace down the right—whipped in a corner that was met by the leaping Luca Reggiani. The 18-year-old defender’s header was pinpoint, marking his first senior goal in front of the home faithful.
Reggiani only started due to a defensive injury crisis, but he didn’t look like a backup.
“I’ve dreamed of that header since I joined the academy,” Reggiani admitted after the game. “To do it here, in this atmosphere, is just incredible.”
Kovac’s Clean Sheet Machine
Nico Kovac has turned Dortmund into a defensive powerhouse this season, and this was their league-leading 12th clean sheet. Augsburg were limited to just seven shots all afternoon, with Gregor Kobel rarely forced into anything beyond routine work.
With 58 points already on the board—surpassing their entire total from last season—Dortmund are no longer just looking over their shoulders at the top four. They are looking up.
