The Super Eagles’ preparations for their upcoming international friendlies in Turkey have taken a major hit following the withdrawal of Fulham defender Calvin Bassey. The versatile center-back has been ruled out of the clashes against Iran and Jordan after picking up a back injury during club duty.
The Details
Bassey reportedly sustained the injury during Fulham’s 3-1 victory over Burnley last weekend. While he was initially named in Eric Chelle’s 23-man squad, the discomfort proved too much, forcing the former Ajax man to stay back in West London for rehabilitation.
The Super Eagles’ media team confirmed the news on Wednesday, wishing the defender a “speedy recovery” as the rest of the squad settled into their Antalya base at the Bellis Deluxe Hotel.
A Growing Defensive Headache
Bassey’s absence is a bitter pill for coach Eric Chelle, especially with the team already missing several heavy hitters. The Super Eagles are currently navigating a mini-injury crisis, with key names like Victor Osimhen, Stanley Nwabali, and Ola Aina also sidelined for this window.
Without Bassey’s physicality and ability to progress the ball from the back, the tactical setup against a disciplined Iran side on Friday becomes a lot more complicated.
Who Steps In?
With 22 players now in camp—including captain Wilfred Ndidi, who arrived late Wednesday—Chelle will have to look at his remaining defensive options:
• Semi Ajayi and Zaidu Sanusi are expected to lead the line.
• Igoh Ogbu and Bruno Onyemaechi will likely see increased minutes.
• Emmanuel Fernandez, a first-time invitee, might just get a baptism of fire in the heart of the defense.
Nigeria faces Iran this Friday (4:00 PM Nigerian time) before taking on Jordan on March 31. Both matches serve as critical preparation as the team enters a new phase following their recent World Cup qualification struggles.
