If you’ve been scrolling through the latest Manchester United transfer rumors, you’ve probably seen the usual suspects. Sandro Tonali? Check. Bruno Guimaraes? Check. But Rio Ferdinand has just thrown a massive spanner in the works, and honestly, United fans might want to listen to this one.
While the club has been heavily linked with a £100m move for Newcastle’s Tonali or Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Rio is looking elsewhere. He’s looking at Alkmaar. Specifically, at a 20-year-old midfield maestro named Kees Smit.
“I’ve Seen the Clips… Man”
Speaking on his latest Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the United legend didn’t hold back. He’s calling for the Red Devils to hijack any potential deals and go all-out for the AZ Alkmaar starlet.
“Kees Smit is the truth man, I’m telling you,” Rio said. “He’s one you go, ‘I’m buying him.’ It doesn’t even have to be for right now. If we’ve got to wait six months to a year for him, I do not care. We cannot allow him to go elsewhere.”
Rio’s hype isn’t just based on a few YouTube highlights either. He’s been doing his homework, speaking to contacts in the Netherlands who are calling Smit “special.” And after watching the kid flourish in the Eredivisie this season, Rio is convinced he’s the perfect long-term partner for Kobbie Mainoo.
Why the Hype?
Smit has been a revelation for AZ this season. He’s got that rare mix of technical Dutch flair and a physical robustness that Rio thinks the Premier League demands. While the club’s scouts have been pushing for Elliot Anderson—who Ferdinand also likes for his “all-action” style—Smit represents that high-ceiling, “generational” talent that United have missed out on too often in the past.
The competition is already heating up, with Real Madrid reportedly sniffing around. Rio’s message to the board is clear: Don’t get caught in a bidding war for established stars when the “next big thing” is staring you right in the face.
The Verdict
United need a midfield refresh, that much is obvious. But while everyone is looking at the big-money Premier League names, Rio is banking on the Dutch “Wonderkid.” If Smit is even half as good as Ferdinand says, United need to get the chequebook out before Madrid comes calling.
