VfB Stuttgart roared back into the Champions League conversation on Sunday evening, dismantling a helpless Hamburger SV with a ruthless 4-0 victory. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side put on a tactical clinic, dominating from start to finish to ensure the points stayed in Swabia and kept their top-three ambitions firmly on track.

After a disappointing slip-up against Dortmund last week, Stuttgart needed a statement performance—and they delivered. The breakthrough came in the 21st minute following a slick passing sequence. Deniz Undav played the architect, feeding Jamie Leweling, whose perfectly weighted square pass found Angelo Stiller to slot home into the bottom corner.

The Swabian Siege

Stuttgart didn’t take their foot off the gas. Just ten minutes later, they doubled their advantage by pouncing on a sloppy turnover from the Hamburg defense. Ermedin Demirovic unselfishly squared the ball for Chris Führich, who made no mistake from close range to make it 2-0 before the break.

The second half was more of the same. In the 56th minute, Maximilian Mittelstädt provided the highlight of the night, unleashing a thunderous strike from nearly 30 yards out. The ball took a slight deflection off Jordan Torunarigha, leaving the Hamburg keeper with absolutely no chance.

Late Flourish

Despite the game being well and truly over, Stuttgart continued to hunt for more. They were awarded a penalty in the 80th minute after Tiago Tomás was brought down in the box, but Undav uncharacteristically blazed his effort over the bar.

Justice was served in the dying embers, however, as substitute Bilal El Khannouss capped off a brilliant team display with a clinical finish in the 86th minute to seal the 4-0 rout.

The Big Picture

With this win, Stuttgart remains in 3rd place, keeping a tight grip on their European dreams with only five games remaining. For Hamburg, the nightmare continues; they sit in 12th and are now winless in their last four outings. On this evidence, Stuttgart looks like a team ready for the big stage, while HSV is left searching for an identity.
