The drama in the Champions League has officially spilled out of the stadium and into the courtroom. Just hours before a season-defining second leg, UEFA has delivered a crushing blow to FC Barcelona, officially rejecting their formal complaint over a “scandalous” refereeing decision during their first-leg loss to Atlético Madrid.

The Handball That Broke the Internet

The controversy stems from a bizarre 54th-minute incident in the first leg at the Camp Nou. After goalkeeper Juan Musso put the ball in motion from a goal kick, Atlético defender Marc Pubill appeared to pick the ball up with his hands inside the box.

Barcelona’s bench went nuclear. They argued that because the ball was already in play, it was a clear-cut penalty. Instead, referee Istvan Kovacs allowed a retake, and VAR remained silent. Barcelona’s legal team filed an official protest, calling it a “major error” and a “grave lack of intervention” that directly influenced their 2-0 defeat.

UEFA’s Cold Shoulder

Barcelona didn’t just want a “sorry.” They demanded access to the referee’s audio communications and an official acknowledgment of the error. They even went as far as to suggest a “clear double standard” in how big decisions go against them in Europe.

However, on April 13, 2026, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body officially declared the protest “inadmissible.” > “Barcelona filed a protest relating to a referee decision. On 13 April 2026, the UEFA Control Ethics and Disciplinary Body declared the protest to be inadmissible,” UEFA stated.

In plain English? UEFA isn’t even going to entertain the conversation. While an observer will routinely review Kovacs’ performance, the result stands, and the “investigation” Barcelona hoped for is effectively dead on arrival.

Flick and Laporta Fuming

Hansi Flick has been vocal about the “incomprehensible” officiating, while Joan Laporta’s legal team is reportedly livid that such a blatant violation of the laws of the game was dismissed so casually. Across the city, Diego Simeone and Atlético have stayed mostly quiet, simply noting that they are “used to these situations” and focusing on the return leg.

For Barcelona, the message is clear: the only way to get justice now is to overturn that 2-0 deficit on the pitch.
