The lights are coming up at San Mamés tonight for a clash that’s all about bragging rights and breaking out of the mid-table mud. Athletic Bilbao welcomes Osasuna in what’s expected to be a cagey, high-stakes affair, with only one point separating these two rivals in the La Liga standings.

For Athletic, the narrative this season has been one of frustration. Currently sitting 11th with 38 points, they’ve struggled to turn dominance into results. Despite their underlying stats suggesting they should be higher up the table, a nightmare defensive run—failing to keep a clean sheet in their last 15 league games—has left them vulnerable. Coming off a bruising 2-1 home loss to Villarreal, the Basque side is desperate to stop the rot.

The Budimir Threat

On the other side of the pitch, Osasuna arrives at the San Mamés sitting in 9th place with 39 points. Unlike their hosts, the visitors have been clinical when it matters most, largely thanks to the red-hot form of Ante Budimir. With 16 league goals to his name this season, Budimir is outperforming his expected numbers and will be the man the Bilbao backline must silence if they want to stand a chance.

Recent history suggests we might be in for a stalemate. The last two league meetings between these two have ended in draws, including a 1-1 scrap back in January. While Athletic will have the backing of a roaring San Mamés crowd, Osasuna’s ability to find the net on the road—scoring in five of their last six away trips to Bilbao—makes this anyone’s game.

Tactical Outlook

Expect Gorka Guruzeta to lead the line for Athletic, searching for the goals that have eluded them lately. For Osasuna, Moi Gómez will be the creative hub, looking to exploit a Bilbao defense that has conceded 45 goals this term. With both teams fighting to keep their fading European dreams on life support, don’t expect many favors to be traded tonight.
