The honeymoon period for Hussein Mohamed’s administration has come to a screeching, chaotic halt. In a move that has sent shockwaves through Kenyan football, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) National Executive Committee (NEC) has officially suspended President Hussein Mohamed over explosive allegations of financial impropriety.

Just 15 months into his tenure, the man who promised to “clean up” Kenyan football is now fighting for his professional life.

The Sh42 Million Question

The drama centers on a staggering Sh42 million allegedly linked to the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The NEC claims there were “serious breaches” of the FKF constitution and Kenyan law, specifically pointing toward irregular procurement processes and the misappropriation of funds meant for CHAN preparations.

In a swift retaliatory strike, the NEC didn’t just stop at the top. They also showed the door to Acting General Secretary Dennis Gicheru and nominated member Abdullahi Yussuf. In their place, former Harambee Stars midfield maestro and current Deputy President Macdonald Mariga has been tapped to take the reins as Acting President.

“When You Fight Graft, It Fights Back”

Hussein Mohamed isn’t going down without a fight. In a blistering late-night statement, Hussein dismissed the suspension as “null and void,” claiming the NEC meeting was unconstitutionally convened.

“The procurement for CHAN 2025 was handled by CAF, not myself,” Hussein stated, maintaining that the FKF never even touched the money in question. He’s framing this as a desperate “smear campaign” orchestrated by remnants of the old guard who are terrified of his reform agenda.

FIFA Steps In

With the federation now effectively split in two, the world governing body FIFA has demanded an “urgent explanation” by May 1st. Kenya’s footballing future hangs in the balance—will this be a genuine cleanup of the sport, or is it just the same old political games under a different name?

One thing is certain: with Mariga now in the hot seat and Hussein refusing to leave, the battle for the soul of Kenyan football is just getting started.
