The first leg of the Champions League semi-final between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid ended in a 1-1 stalemate yesterday, but the real fireworks happened off the ball. Both Mikel Arteta and Diego Simeone were left “fuming” after a game dominated by three massive penalty decisions, leaving the tie on a knife-edge heading into the second leg.

While the fans at the Metropolitano were treated to a tactical battle, the managers’ post-match rants have stolen the headlines.

Arteta’s “13 Times” Meltdown

Mikel Arteta did not hold back in his post-match interview with TNT Sports, labeling the decision to overturn a late Arsenal penalty as “completely unacceptable.” With the score locked at 1-1 in the 82nd minute, substitute Eberechi Eze appeared to be tripped in the box by David Hancko. Referee Danny Makkelie initially pointed to the spot but reversed the call after a lengthy VAR review.

“The whole sequence tells the story. There is clear contact,” Arteta fumed. “You make that decision, you cannot overturn it when you have to look at it 13 times. If it’s not a ‘clear and obvious’ error, you don’t change it. It’s wrong, and it changes the course of the tie.”

Simeone’s “Dark Arts” Under Fire

On the other side, Diego Simeone was his usual explosive self. While he celebrated the overturned penalty like a goal—screaming in the faces of his players and the fourth official—he was also vocal about the first-half penalty awarded to Arsenal.

Simeone and the Atletico bench spent the night putting immense pressure on Danny Makkelie, a tactic that didn’t go unnoticed by pundits. Steven Gerrard noted that Simeone was “in the referee’s ear” while he was at the monitor, calling it a masterclass in the “dark arts.”

Despite the drama, Simeone insisted the draw wasn’t down to luck or VAR:

“I don’t believe in luck; I believe in clinical finishing. We had the chances in the second half to win it, but we weren’t sharp enough.”
The Penalty Summary

The game will go down in history as the first Champions League knockout match since 2001 to have 100% of its goals come from the spot:

1. 44th Minute: Viktor Gyökeres converts for Arsenal after being fouled by Hancko.

2. 56th Minute: Julián Álvarez equalizes for Atleti after a Ben White handball.

3. 82nd Minute: The “Controversy”—Makkelie overturns his original decision to award Arsenal a second penalty.

With both managers convinced they were hard done by, the second leg at the Emirates is shaping up to be an absolute war.
