The football world was hit with a curveball this morning as Niklas Süle, the towering Borussia Dortmund and former Bayern Munich defender, announced he’s hanging up his boots at the end of the season. At just 30 years old—an age when many center-backs are entering their “golden years”—Süle is walking away from the pitch, leaving fans and teammates stunned.
But behind the highlight reels and the five Bundesliga titles lies a deeply personal reason for the exit. In a vulnerable appearance on the Spielmacher podcast, Süle opened up about the mental and physical toll the game has taken on him.
The Breaking Point in Hoffenheim
The decision wasn’t made overnight, but it was solidified during a scary moment last month against his former club, Hoffenheim. After a knee injury, the team doctor performed the “drawer test” to check for ligament damage.
“When the doctor looked at the physio and shook his head… I went into the shower and cried for 10 minutes,” Süle admitted.
Having already survived two ACL tears in his career, the fear of a third was too much to bear. Even though the MRI later revealed the damage wasn’t as severe as feared, the “scare” was the final wake-up call. For Süle, the thought of spending months in rehab again—away from his children and unable to live an independent, healthy life—was a price he was no longer willing to pay.
More Than Just Injuries
Süle’s career has often been overshadowed by public scrutiny regarding his weight and fitness. He candidly discussed the extreme measures he sometimes took to meet club standards, including fasting and wearing raincoats in saunas to sweat out water weight before weigh-ins.
It’s clear that the constant battle with his body, combined with the physical demands of elite football, has led him to prioritize his long-term health over another few years of professional play.
A Legacy of Silverware
While 30 feels young, Süle’s trophy cabinet is fuller than most veterans. His resume is elite:
• 5 Bundesliga Titles (with Bayern Munich)
• Champions League Winner (2020)
• 49 Caps for Germany
• DFB-Pokal Winner
He nearly added a fairy-tale ending with Dortmund in 2023, famously clearing a Kylian Mbappé shot off the line in a heroic Champions League moment. Though he fell just short of a Bundesliga title with BVB, his impact on the German game is undeniable.
As his contract expires on June 30th, Süle isn’t looking for a new club. He’s looking for a holiday, time with his family, and a life where he doesn’t have to worry about the next “drawer test.”
