The ink is barely dry on Michael Carrick’s new two-year contract as Manchester United’s permanent manager, and INEOS is already working overtime to hand him his very first marquee signing. If the latest whispers out of Italy are anything to go by, United are on the absolute precipice of landing their new midfield engine.

Atalanta’s Brazilian powerhouse Éderson is reportedly “one step away” from trading Bergamo for Old Trafford in a deal that has moved at lightning speed over the last 48 hours. With Casemiro’s departure looking like a formality and Manuel Ugarte heavily linked with a move away, United desperately need a physical, ball-winning powerhouse to protect Kobbie Mainoo. Éderson fits that bill to perfection.

Here is exactly where the transfer stands, what it will cost, and how the hierarchy in Italy is reacting to the news.

The Agreement: Fees and Personal Terms Leaked

According to top-tier Italian transfer insider Michele Criscitiello, the deal between Manchester United and Atalanta is “almost closed.” The two clubs have reportedly shaken hands on a total package worth €50 million (£43.2 million), with an agreement reached on all fronts.

The 26-year-old Brazilian international has already greenlit the move, having given a resounding “YES” to the United hierarchy. Reports indicate that personal terms have been verbally agreed upon on a long-term contract running until 2031. Éderson is set to pocket a cool £100,000 per week at Old Trafford.

United’s negotiations were undoubtedly smoothed over by their excellent working relationship with Atalanta, having previously negotiated mega-deals for Rasmus Højlund and Amad Diallo.

The Atalanta Stance: “Serenity and Calm”

While fans are ready to welcome the Brazilian to Carrington, the hierarchy back in Italy has been trying to play things with a straight face.

When pressed about Manchester United’s aggressive pursuit of their midfield crown jewel, Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi didn’t deny the massive Premier League interest, but he insisted the Italian club would not be bullied or rushed into making a decision before they are fully ready.

“We have no official offers, only interest from other teams,” Percassi stated. “I think it’s unlikely that teams will make a move before the end of the season. Interest in our players is normal, but we’ll evaluate them at the right time with great serenity and calm.”

Despite Percassi trying to cool the flames publicly, the financial reality of a €50 million bid for a player whose contract expires in 2027 is simply too good for Atalanta to turn down.

Why Éderson is the Perfect Carrick Recruit

If you watched Atalanta destroy opponents in Serie A this year, you know exactly why Carrick wants him. Éderson is an absolute defensive monster. Operating in a high-intensity system under Gian Piero Gasperini, he has evolved into one of the most complete box-to-box destroyers in European football.

Unlike Casemiro, who has struggled with the tracking speed of the Premier League this season, Éderson possesses incredible recovery pace, elite tactical discipline, and a relentless work rate. He averages high-tier tackle success rates and is elite at turning defensive turnovers into rapid transition attacks.

Plugging him in next to Kobbie Mainoo gives United the perfect blend of steel and silk. It allows Mainoo the freedom to progress the ball forward without worrying about the gaping holes behind him that plagued United’s midfield throughout the season.

With Carrick officially at the wheel and the transfer window looming, wrapping up Éderson this early sends a massive statement to the rest of the top four. The rebuild is officially underway.
