The green army didn’t even have to lace up their boots this weekend to confirm what the entire country already knew: Nairobi is green. In a wild and completely unexpected final-day twist, Gor Mahia were officially crowned the 2025/26 FKF Premier League champions without kicking a single ball, reclaiming their domestic crown and sealing an absolutely legendary, record-extending 22nd league title.

While K’Ogalo’s highly anticipated fixture against Mara Sugar was put on ice following a late venue dispute from the Sports Disputes Tribunal, all eyes turned to the Kericho Green Stadium. Arch-rivals AFC Leopards marched into the tie knowing only an absolute victory would keep their fading, mathematical title hopes alive. Instead, a relentless APS Bomet put on a counter-attacking clinic, stunning Ingwe 2-1 and officially sending the league trophy back to the Gor Mahia cabinet with matches still to spare.

The afternoon quickly evolved into a nightmare for the blue and white side of the divide. After a tense, deadlocked first half, APS Bomet broke the game wide open in the 58th minute when Philip Wasai curled a brilliant, composed strike into the far corner. Before Leopards could even clear their heads, Wasai struck again just four minutes later, meeting a dangerous Festus Kipkemoi long ball to power home a thunderous header. A late own goal gave Ingwe a lifeline, but Bomet held completely firm to stretch their unbeaten run to ten matches.

As the final whistle blew in Kericho, a wave of pure ecstasy rippled through the Gor Mahia fanbase. Ingwe’s collapse leaves them stranded on 64 points with just one match left, completely unable to catch K’Ogalo’s formidable 68-point haul. For Leopards, the agonizing 28-year wait for a league title drags on, while Gor Mahia celebrates a glorious return to the summit after surrendering the trophy to Kenya Police FC last season.

This championship marks an absolute triumph of consistency and grit for K’Ogalo. While the pack chased them closely all season—at one point narrowing the gap to just two points—the defining turning point undoubtedly came on April 26. A tactical masterclass in the Mashemeji Derby saw Gor squeeze past Leopards 1-0, a decisive psychological blow that broke the spirit of the chasing pack.

The triumph also adds another mind-blowing chapter to the history books for midfield general Ernest Wendo. With this latest medal, Wendo has now captured an astonishing eight league titles, cementing his legacy as the most decorated individual player in the history of Kenyan football.

With the league title officially wrapped up and a coveted ticket to the CAF Champions League safely secured, the upcoming, rescheduled match against Mara Sugar will turn into a complete celebration. Expect the Sugar Millers to offer a well-deserved guard of honour as the undisputed kings of Kenyan football prepare to lift the trophy in front of a roaring, jubilant Green Army.
