Manchester United have wasted absolutely no time kicking off their summer rebuild, reaching a full agreement to sign Atalanta’s midfield powerhouse Éderson. The Brazilian dynamic engine is locked in to become the very first marquee signing of the Michael Carrick era at Old Trafford.
According to transfer insiders, the Red Devils have wrapped up negotiations with the Serie A side for a total package worth around £38.8 million. United will pay a guaranteed upfront fee of £35 million (€40.5 million), with an additional £3.8 million structured in achievable add-ons. Personal terms are 100% agreed on a long-term contract running until June 2030, which includes the club’s standard option for a further 12-month extension.
The 26-year-old mid-season maestro had reportedly paused discussions with several other top European clubs—including Atletico Madrid—the second United formalized their interest. He made it clear that a move to the Theatre of Dreams was his absolute priority.
This swift piece of business addresses a massive void in the United engine room. With Casemiro departing Old Trafford following the expiry of his contract, Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox pinned Éderson as the ideal tactical successor. Known for his elite work rate, physical dominance, and tactical intelligence, the former Salernitana man is the definition of a modern box-to-box workhorse. His ability to anchor the midfield and break up opposition attacks is expected to finally unleash Kobbie Mainoo, granting the young academy graduate total freedom to push further up the pitch.
The writing was on the wall last month when Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino conspicuously left Éderson out of the starting lineup for their final league clash against Fiorentina, subtly admitting afterward that “concrete negotiations with a top club” were already at an advanced stage.
While the summer transfer window doesn’t officially open until June 15, Éderson is scheduled to undergo his medical and sign the paperwork early next month. United are far from finished, with reports suggesting Carrick is determined to bring in at least one more elite midfielder to partner with his new Brazilian star.
