Chaos at the Bernabéu: Florentino Pérez Faces His First Election Battle in 20 Years

Real Madrid is used to drama on the pitch, but right now, the biggest battle is happening in the boardroom. For the first time in two decades, the 79-year-old club president Florentino Pérez is actually facing a challenger at the ballot box. Club members are heading to Valdebebas to cast their votes, and the stakes could not be higher for the future of the world’s most valuable soccer franchise.

Pérez, who has run entirely unopposed in every election cycle since 2009, called for these early elections during an intense, agitated press conference where he claimed the Spanish media was actively trying to kill his presidency. But instead of a smooth cruise to another term lasting until 2029, he triggered a massive institutional showdown.

Stepping into the ring against the incumbent is Enrique Riquelme, a 37-year-old renewable energy executive who was just a kid when Pérez first took power. Riquelme is running a highly aggressive campaign designed to appeal to younger socios who are tired of a perceived lack of democracy at the club. He has focused heavily on the restrictive club statutes introduced under Pérez in 2012, which require presidential candidates to have been members for 20 years and to personally provide financial collateral equal to 15% of the club’s massive budget.

The campaign trail has turned into an absolute circus of massive transfer promises. Riquelme sent shockwaves through the fanbase by claiming that Manchester City striker Erling Haaland wants to come to Madrid, declaring on Spanish state broadcaster TVE that if he wins, Haaland will be playing in the white shirt. While Haaland’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, quickly dismissed the claim as untrue, Riquelme has still managed to build massive credibility by surrounding himself with club royalty. He has secured the backing of Real Madrid icons Raúl González, Iker Casillas, and Fernando Hierro, promising Raúl the role of sports director and Hierro control of the youth academy.

Not one to be outdone, Pérez fired back by teasing that he will announce the most expensive transfer in Real Madrid history right after the election, a deal worth at least 150 million euros. Pérez’s track record with making impossible Galáctico transfers come true gives his promises immense weight, but his current form has given his challenger plenty of ammunition.

Riquelme has been quick to point out the vulnerabilities in the current regime. Despite the massive arrival of Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid has failed to win major titles over the past two seasons, a drought that saw Pérez part ways with three different managers: Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, and Álvaro Arbeloa. To add fuel to the fire, Riquelme is heavily targeting Pérez’s controversial proposal to sell a 10% stake in the club to private investors. Pérez argues it is the only way to establish the club’s true market value, but critics see it as a dangerous first step toward destroying Madrid’s historic, 124-year-old member-owned model.

Whether the club stays on its historic path under the veteran mastermind or enters a completely new era led by an ambitious millennial executive, the outcome of this vote will change the fabric of Real Madrid forever.
