If you missed yesterday’s blockbuster between Portugal and Croatia, you missed what is easily the most chaotic, heart-stopping match of the 2026 World Cup so far. In a battle of two true football icons, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portuguese squad managed to squeeze past Luka Modric’s Croatia with a dramatic 2-1 win at the Toronto Stadium. It was a match filled with crazy VAR twists, massive milestones, and a last-second winner that blew the roof off the stadium.

The first half was a tense, tactical chess match with both teams playing it incredibly safe, but the second half exploded into pure madness. Croatia drew first blood in the 53rd minute when the veteran Ivan Perisic slid a brilliant finish underneath Diogo Costa. Portugal looked rattled, but their salvation came from a familiar hero. After Renato Veiga was hauled down in the box, Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and buried a high-pressure penalty down the middle. Unbelievably, that equalizer marked Ronaldo’s first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout stage!

With the game seemingly destined for extra time, Roberto Martinez threw the dice and substituted Ronaldo for fresh legs. It proved to be a stroke of absolute genius. In the 94th minute, Rafael Leao delivered a pin-point cross into the box, and super-sub Gonçalo Ramos rose highest to power home a beautiful header, driving the Portuguese fans into complete meltdown.

But the drama didn’t end there. In a truly frantic period of stoppage time, Croatia thought they had forced extra time when Josko Gvardiol found the net. However, VAR stepped in to rule it out for offside—the fourth time a goal was chalked off by the video referee in this chaotic game! While Portugal advances to set up a mouth-watering Round of 16 clash against European champions Spain on Monday, it is likely the final curtain call for the legendary Luka Modric on the world stage. What a game, and what a tournament!
