Total Masterclass! La Roja Cruise Into The World Cup Round of 16

If anyone was wondering whether Spain could translate their regular-season poetry into ruthless knockout football, yesterday gave us a definitive answer. La Roja completely dismantled Austria 3-0 at the Los Angeles Stadium, dishing out an absolute tactical masterclass to march straight into the World Cup Round of 16. It was their first World Cup knockout victory since that historic 2010 final, and they did it in total style.

Luis de la Fuente’s men were almost flawless from front to back. While the glittering offense will dominate the back pages today, the most mind-blowing stat from last night is that Spain did not allow a single shot on target. Unai Simón had the quietest evening of his life, shielded by a backline that suffocated Austria’s physicality from the very first whistle.

After a cagey opening half-hour, Spain clicked into gear following the hydration break. Marc Cucurella was an absolute menace on the left flank, slicing the Austrian defense open to find Mikel Oyarzabal in the 36th minute. The Real Sociedad skipper calmly tucked it away to break the deadlock and set the tone.

The second half was pure showboating and dominance. In the 66th minute, Álex Baena floated a beautiful cross to the back post, where an unmarked Pedro Porro charged in to power home a superb header—his first-ever international goal for Spain. To wrap things up in a neat little bow, Cucurella linked up with Oyarzabal once more in the 89th minute, with the forward beating the offside trap to slot home his second of the night and his fourth of the tournament.

This is the first time Spain has scored more than two goals in a World Cup knockout match since 1994, proving this generation has the cutting edge to go all the way. Up next is a massive Round of 16 clash against the winner of the Portugal vs Croatia tie. If they keep playing like this, the rest of the world should be very, very worried.
