The Signal Iduna Park was a whirlwind of emotion on Friday night as Borussia Dortmund fought back from an early shock to defeat Eintracht Frankfurt 3-2. The victory doesn’t just add three points to the tally—it officially guarantees that BVB will finish the season as Bundesliga runners-up, leaving RB Leipzig in their wake.
Uzun Stuns the Yellow Wall
The match couldn’t have started worse for the hosts. With only 78 seconds on the clock, former Dortmund man Mahmoud Dahoud reminded the home faithful of his quality, weaving through three defenders before laying it off to Can Uzun. The youngster made no mistake, curling a beautiful effort into the bottom corner to give Frankfurt a dream start.
For much of the first half, it looked like Frankfurt might play the role of ultimate spoilers. However, Dortmund’s resilience—a hallmark of their season under Niko Kovač—began to shine through as the interval approached.
The Five-Minute Flip
Dortmund finally broke through in the 42nd minute. Julian Ryerson, who has been an assist machine this season, delivered a pinpoint cross for Serhou Guirassy to sweep home his 16th goal of the campaign.
Before Frankfurt could even catch their breath, they were behind. In the second minute of first-half stoppage time, Jobe Bellingham and Maximilian Beier combined brilliantly, with the latter crossing for Nico Schlotterbeck to steer the ball into the far post. Just like that, the momentum had completely shifted.
A Maiden Goal and a Nervous Finish
The second half saw Dortmund control the tempo, and the decisive blow came in the 72nd minute. Samuele Inácio, the 18-year-old Italian prodigy, ghosted into the box to volley home Beier’s cross. It was Inácio’s first-ever Bundesliga goal, and the celebration in front of the Yellow Wall suggested it’s the first of many.
Frankfurt’s Jonathan Burkardt managed to pull one back with three minutes remaining, setting up a frantic finale. Despite a late scare from Jean-Matteo Bahoya, Dortmund held firm to secure their 21st win of the season.
Farewell to Legends
Beyond the scoreline, it was an emotional night for the Dortmund faithful. The club bid farewell to Sebastian Kehl, Julian Brandt, Salih Özcan, and Niklas Süle. Süle, who came on as a late substitute, is set to hang up his boots at the end of the season, marking the end of an era for the German international.
