The road to North America has reached its absolute limit. Today, Thursday, March 26, 2026, the remaining hopefuls enter the “pressure cooker” of the playoffs. There are no second chances, no aggregate scores to fall back on, and no room for error. By the end of the night, we’ll know which teams are one step away from the biggest party in sports.

From the historic turf of Bergamo to the high-stakes atmosphere in Mexico, here is the breakdown of today’s massive qualifying ties and what we expect to go down.

The European “Pathways”: Giants Under Pressure

Europe still has four tickets left, and sixteen teams are fighting to grab them. Today’s semi-finals set the stage for Tuesday’s finals.

In Path A, all eyes are on the New Balance Arena where Italy hosts Northern Ireland. Gennaro Gattuso’s “Azzurri” are carrying the weight of a nation that has missed the last two tournaments. With Mateo Retegui in clinical form, Italy is the heavy favorite, but Northern Ireland’s defensive grit under Michael O’Neill shouldn’t be underestimated. We’re calling a 2-0 Italy win, though it might be a nervous night for the home fans.

Meanwhile, Wales welcomes Bosnia-Herzegovina to a rocking Cardiff City Stadium. Craig Bellamy has the “Dragons” playing with a real fire, and with the “Red Wall” behind them, they usually find a way. Bosnia still relies on the legendary Edin Džeko, but Wales’ youth and pace should edge this one 2-1.

In other European action, Denmark should have too much quality for North Macedonia, while the clash between the Czech Republic and Republic of Ireland in Prague feels like the “toss-up” of the night. We wouldn’t be surprised to see that one go all the way to a penalty shootout.

The Inter-Confederation Playoffs: Mexico’s Turning Point

Over in Mexico, the inter-confederation tournament is heating up at the homes of Chivas and Monterrey.

Bolivia vs. Suriname (Monterrey):

Bolivia arrives with the confidence of their South American qualifying battles. While Suriname has some exciting European-based talent like Joël Piroe, the tactical experience of “La Verde” in high-pressure games is a massive advantage. Suriname will likely sit deep and look for the counter, but Bolivia’s persistence should pay off. Prediction: Bolivia 2-1.

New Caledonia vs. Jamaica (Guadalajara):

This is a classic “David vs. Goliath” scenario. New Caledonia has shown incredible heart to get this far, but the “Reggae Boyz” are a different beast. With Andre Blake’s security in goal and the attacking threat of Leon Bailey, Jamaica has a clear gulf in quality. They are hunting for their first World Cup appearance since 1998, and we don’t see them slipping up here. Prediction: Jamaica 3-0.

The Stakes for Tuesday

The winners of today’s matches don’t just get to celebrate; they immediately start prepping for the final hurdles on March 31. Winners in Mexico will face Iraq and DR Congo, who are already waiting in the wings after receiving byes. In Europe, the four winners will host the final showdowns for those golden tickets to the 2026 World Cup.
