The prestigious Football Writers’ Association (FWA) has officially crowned Bruno Fernandes as the Men’s Footballer of the Year for 2026. In one of the closest votes in recent memory, the Manchester United captain narrowly edged out Arsenal’s Declan Rice by just 28 votes to claim the oldest individual honor in English football.
A Historic Return to the Top
Fernandes’ victory marks a significant milestone for the Red Devils, as he becomes the first Manchester United player to lift the FWA trophy since Wayne Rooney in 2010. While United have faced a period of transition, Fernandes has been the undisputed heartbeat of the side, spearheading a resurgence under interim boss Michael Carrick that has secured Champions League football for next season.
The Portuguese maestro has enjoyed a truly “record-breaking” campaign. With 19 Premier League assists already on the board, he sits just one shy of the all-time single-season record shared by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. With three games still to play, the odds are firmly in his favor to stand alone at the top of the history books.
By the Numbers: Why Bruno Won
The FWA membership, comprising nearly 900 journalists, pointed to Fernandes’ sheer creative output as the deciding factor. While Declan Rice’s defensive mastery led Arsenal to a title charge, the statistics behind the United skipper were simply too massive to ignore:
• Goal Involvements: 27 in the Premier League (8 goals, 19 assists).
• Chances Created: A staggering 120, the highest total of his career.
• Leadership: Taking full control of a squad in flux and driving them into a top-three finish.
A “Manchester Double”
It was a historic night for the city of Manchester as a whole. While Fernandes took the men’s gong, Manchester City’s Khadija “Bunny” Shaw was named the Women’s Footballer of the Year for the second time. Shaw’s landslide victory came after she fired City to their first WSL title in a decade, further cementing Manchester as the current capital of English football talent.
Both winners will be presented with their trophies at the landmark FWA dinner in London on May 19, an event that will officially celebrate a season where the “Special Portuguese” proved he is still the king of the assist.
