The Belgian Football Association (KBVB) is moving at breakneck speed to replace Rudi Garcia, and former Royal Antwerp manager Mark van Bommel has quickly shot to the top of the shortlist to take charge of the Red Devils.
Garcia stepped down following Belgium’s quarter-final departure at the 2026 World Cup, where they pushed eventual champions Spain to the brink in a narrow 2-1 loss. With Garcia’s contract coming to an end, the Belgian FA chose not to extend his tenure, immediately kicking off search efforts for a new manager who can steer the national team into its next chapter.
Why Van Bommel Fits the Belgian Brief
The 49-year-old Dutchman is reportedly the leading favorite for the post, and it is easy to see why. Van Bommel knows Belgian football inside out, having masterminded a historic domestic double with Royal Antwerp in 2023 by capturing both the Belgian Pro League title and the Belgian Cup.
Though he has been out of work since departing Antwerp in June 2024, his proven blueprint of aggressive tactical organization and familiarity with the Belgian football ecosystem makes him a natural, plug-and-play candidate for the KBVB.
